A Study in Contrasts

The tree on the left is healthy. The tree on the right is dead from a beetle infestation. Both are old trees growing within 50’ feet of each other. I have no idea why one lives and the other dies. What I do know is the dead tree is closer to a gravel road. However the road was put in in 1966 and the tree only died recently. It had been dry in the years before this tree died; maybe the roadway interfered with moisture retention and runoff?
